Lynnfield Youth Soccer Club is proud to offer a second year of an accredited Mass Youth/Mass Ref Grassroots Referee Program to our players who would like to learn how to be referees. Massachusetts Referee Certification age requirements do not permit individuals under the age of 14 to become fully USSF certified referees, but the GRP allows players 6th grade through 8th grade the opportunity to be trained and get experience to prepare them to become certified.
The training referees must attend 2.5 hours of classroom instruction, including review of the Laws of the Game, game management, and specific application of LYSC rules. After completing the classroom portion, participants will receive ongoing on field instruction and experience by being assigned to LYSC G2 games under the supervision of LYSC referee mentors.
The Fall 2019 class is scheduled for Friday September 6th from 6pm- 8:30pm for all interested participants at the St. Paul’s Church, Summer Street, Lynnfield. All interested participants must attend this training session in order to referee in G2.
LYSC will provide training materials, and a referee jersey and whistle for each participant. Participants will be required to provide a stopwatch, which may be purchased from LYSC for $16. They will receive a training stipend for each game slot they are on the field. Current rates are $20 for main referee and $10 for sideline referee per G2 game. The stipend will be issued at the conclusion of the season.
Games are on Sundays at Lynnfield Middle School and participants are expected to be available for at least 4 weeks each season.
Eligible players are current 6th - 8th grade players in the LYSC program.
The minimum age to become a USSF Certified Official by completing the Massachusetts State Referee Committee/USSF Grade 8 Referee Course is 14. Participants who show the aptitude and desire to become certified may be eligible for fee waiver for the Mass Youth Referee Training.
